Greenhouse tables

About this piece

When Rose Park’s greenhouse program needed planting tables, the request sent out was simple: was there a “dad” willing to help build them?

Instead, Elyse showed up.

What started as a straightforward volunteer project quickly became something more meaningful. From picking up the lumber herself to building and delivering all nine tables, the entire project was completed in just two days.

At the time, it was one of the first moments she began to realize her abilities extended far beyond the small organizing and creative projects she had always been known for. She could build. Problem solve. Figure things out as she went. And finish something substantial with her own hands.

She did leave behind one request:

“If any of the kids ever ask who made them, tell them a woman did.”

Because representation matters. Because someday, a young girl might lean against one of those greenhouse tables and begin to expand her understanding of what she is capable of.
