My Theo - a Series
This portrait was inspired by a man who reminded me deeply of Theo from the book Theo of Golden - a story recommended to me by the very person this drawing is of.
As I read, I found myself thinking over and over again, this is Jim.
Not because of grand gestures or loud wisdom, but because of the quiet way he moves through the world. The way he listens more than he speaks. The way he makes people feel seen. The steady presence he offers to families, neighbors, and especially children - many of whom are not his own, yet are loved by him as though they were.
Jim carries immense grief. He has endured the loss of children through sickness and tragedy, and yet somehow continues to live with openness, gentleness, humor, and joy. Not a naive joy, but a sorrowful one. A joy with depth. The kind earned through suffering rather than protected from it.
That is what I wanted this portrait to capture.
Not simply the likeness of a man, but the feeling of being near someone who quietly changes the lives around him. Someone who asks for no recognition, yet leaves lasting fingerprints on the hearts of others.
This drawing is my way of honoring a kind of goodness that often goes unnoticed . A soft-spoken, steadfast, and deeply human.
My Theo.
